Berlin, Eurovision and a Night at Generator Hostels

Berlin always manages to show a different side of itself. No matter how many times I return, the city keeps surprising me — this time with a Eurovision weekend, an international atmosphere and a hotel experience that felt much more than just a place to sleep.

We arrived at the Generator Berlin Alexanderplatz as invited guests, where we watched this year’s Eurovision Song Contest final surrounded by people from all over the world, right in the heart of Berlin’s vibrant energy. From the very first moment, it was clear that this was not the typical quiet hotel experience. Generator feels more like a lively social hub — part hostel, part hotel, part creative meeting point and nightlife venue.

And somehow, that spirit fits Berlin perfectly.

Around Alexanderplatz, the city already has its own constant pulse, but Generator amplifies it even more. Downstairs, young travelers, couples, digital nomads, backpackers and creatives from different countries mix together effortlessly while music plays in the background. Some people are playing shuffleboard or beer pong, others are discussing Eurovision performances over cocktails.

And yes — we played ping pong too.

That is probably the essence of the whole Generator experience: you do not need to impress anyone. No overdressing, no pressure, no trying too hard. You simply arrive, and within minutes you somehow become part of the atmosphere.

What I especially liked is that although the concept clearly targets younger travelersn, the design never feels cheap. The Berlin Generators have a strong visual identity with street art, contemporary installations, urban interiors, neon lights and creative communal spaces everywhere. The Generator Berlin Mitte, for example, was created from two restored 19th-century buildings and has its own artistic courtyard atmosphere.

The next morning, breakfast was another pleasant surprise. Exactly what you need after a long Berlin evening: relaxed, generous and easy-going, yet still good quality. And the coffee was surprisingly good — which, honestly, can sometimes be even more important than the room itself while traveling. Sitting there in the morning with a large coffee, watching the slowly waking international crowd, we really felt that special youthful Berlin vibe one more time before leaving.

The Generator brand is now present in many major cities around the world — including London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Stockholm and even New York. That makes it even more exciting, because once you experience this atmosphere, you immediately start feeling curious about discovering other Generator locations as well.

And as for Eurovision itself, watching it in Berlin within such an international crowd was a unique experience. It reminded me how important these shared cultural moments still are across Europe. Around us were different languages, flags, reactions, laughter and cheering — and somehow, for one evening, complete strangers became part of the same experience together.

If you are visiting Berlin and looking for something more alive, social and relaxed than a traditional hotel, Generator is definitely worth considering. Especially for younger travelers, groups of friends, creatives or anyone who enjoys meeting people while exploring a city.

And honestly, as travel journalists, we would truly love to discover more Generator destinations in other countries as well.
