Miracle of Athens
by: Veszeli Annamária

Where history and modern life meet

Athens is not just the capital of Greece: it’s a place where the aroma of Greek coffee drifts among ancient marble stones, and the salty breeze from the sea mixes with the scent of freshly baked pita.

I spent a week here – as a guest in three very different hotels and every day the city showed me a new face.

During this time, I realized: this city doesn’t live only in history books. Here, past and present coexist side by side -under the shadow of ancient temples, young people sip frappé, fresh olives are loudly sold in the markets, while the latest pop hits play in the background.

When we think of Athens, most of us picture the silhouette of the Acropolis at sunset, the white marble columns, and maybe the scent of ouzo in the air. But I saw the city from a different perspective this time – immersing myself for a week not only in history but in the vibrant, modern life of Athens. And of course… thanks to the support of the magazine’s sponsors, in the most comfortable way possible.

For me, this trip was about contrasts – and about truly feeling Athens when you are willing to stray off the beaten tourist path. So I won’t write about the usual sights – everyone knows about them or can look them up. Instead, I want to convey a feeling you experience when you’re there, right in the cradle of culture, which you imagine quite differently than when you actually live it.

As a travel journalist or a private adventurer, I usually stray from the beaten path, always eating where the locals do, seeking out unique sights, and easily making friends to learn as much as possible about a country’s culture. Athens was no different. I love luxury, but I also enjoy the charm of simplicity. If you’re open when you travel, the greatest experiences find you. So let the scents, colors, and people affect you, and you will always be surprised and open to impressions that will stay with you for a lifetime. Come along on my Athenian adventure.

Athens – The city of light and shadow

Athens opens before you the cradle of civilization and the raw reality of a modern metropolis at the same time. Here you can experience both “high” and “low” in a single day: in the morning, you sip cappuccino from a luxury hotel’s rooftop sunbed, with the sunlit silhouette of the Acropolis in the background; in the afternoon, you see the grayer side of the streets – homeless people, abandoned buildings, those struggling to survive, and sadly, signs of drug problems.

Relax
Relax

As you walk through the downtown streets, a full gastronomic spectrum unfolds before your nose: Michelin-star-worthy fine dining restaurants stand just a few steps away from small family-run gyros bars where you can get hot, juicy meat, crispy fries, and spicy tzatziki in fresh pita for just 4 euros. And the best part: almost every corner has such a gem.

The city’s pulse is made smooth by excellent public transport. The metro is clean and fast, the tram takes you to the seaside, and the buses are surprisingly punctual—even if the Mediterranean chaos colors the streets.

Athens Capital Hotel MGallery Collection 5 stars – Luxury, Art, and Exclusive panorama in one place

Our first night was spent in the impressive yet welcoming Athens Capital Hotel downtown. This became our base where you find soft comfort in the city’s beating rhythm. Modern, elegant, yet cozy atmosphere – and most importantly: a panoramic rooftop terrace where you can watch the city while drinking your morning coffee. It feels like sitting right in the middle of a postcard. The Athens Capital Hotel is not just accommodation but also a contemporary art gallery. Its walls are decorated with works by renowned Greek artists like Dimitris Mytaras and Yannis Tsarouchis, blending modern and classical motifs. This artistic presence is not just decoration but the key to the hotel’s atmosphere. The Capital Hotel, the first in the MGallery collection in Greece, is located near Syntagma Square — a perfect starting point for exploring Athens. Its walls are adorned with over 200 abstract works by Greek and international contemporary artists, along with quotes from Simone de Beauvoir and Coco Chanel. This art presence is subtle and inspiring, like living in a boutique gallery.

Everything for perfect relaxation

Rooms range from standard to deluxe and junior suites. The rooms are modern and minimalist in style, soundproofed, some with balconies, minibars, TV, and luxury toiletries await guests. Every room is air-conditioned, with a minibar, large-screen TV, and free Wi-Fi. Junior suites are more spacious with custom-designed furniture and city views.

Contemporary panorama in an ancient setting

The rooftop terrace is a pride of the Capital: an exclusive infinity pool awaits guests, surrounded by comfortable ergonomic sunbeds. From here, there is an unparalleled view of the Acropolis and the city, a perfect spot to admire the sunset. The rooftop terrace’s covered infinity pool is a favorite place for guests: sunbeds, stunning views, and a relaxing experience.

The breakfast is special: for lovers of local specialties, Greek yogurt with honey and fresh fruits, and traditional spanakopita (spinach pie) are the most popular choices. Freshly baked pastries and aromatic Greek coffee complete the offering.

Rooftop terrace view of the Acropolis

If you are looking for the meeting point of elegance and practicality, Athens Capital Hotel is the perfect choice. Clean, modern interiors, spacious rooms, and a rooftop terrace where the Acropolis shines in the evening light.

Tip: Don’t miss dinner or a cool cocktail on the terrace, as the city’s blue and gold sky takes on new meaning from above.

Gastronomic detours

Mezze – A bite of greek soul

The Athenian experience is of course unimaginable without gastronomy. As a food journalist, I rarely feel such a harmonious unity of taste, scent, and story. At Mezze, for example, I tasted such authentic bites that the smell of spices still haunts me. Fresh, flavorful, and behind every bite, you feel the Greek hospitality. Their dishes are both traditional and playfully new: the tzatziki has a fresh minty breath, the charcoal-grilled fish a smoky aroma, and the crispy pita tells the story that here, food is made from the heart.

Mezze Athens is the newest restaurant of the Kastelorizo group, opened on the central Mitropoleos Street. Its clean, friendly design and authentic atmosphere invite guests to share a meal.

Breakfast is unique:

“Twisted English Breakfast”

Crème brûlée rice pudding and millefeuille pancakes are among the specialties.

From lunch, the menu switches to meze dishes: rotisserie chicken, seafood (like marinated sea bream), and ceviche-style platters, all reinterpreted with modern touches by Executive Chef Vasilis Kafaloukos. We started with Greek salad, a favorite of mine with soft, sweet onions that never bite and high-quality olive oil leaving a slight bitterness on the palate.

I washed down the delicious bites with retsina – I know it’s not the most exclusive wine, but strangely it’s one of my favorites, and you definitely shouldn’t miss it in an authentic place. The dessert was divine – the special Greek sweet makes you feel like you’re in heaven.

Koukouvaya Dessert – Sweet Masterpieces

And when it comes to sweets… Koukouvaya Dessert is pure sweet sin, it is not just a pastry shop – it’s a dessert theater. The sweets arriving on the plate are so beautiful it’s hard to start eating, but once you do, you realize every bite promises a Greek summer. Their desserts are masterpieces not only in taste but in appearance – you almost regret starting.

A dessert experience in the spirit of Greek lifestyle

Koukouvaya Desserts has long been an iconic brand—originally from Chania, Crete, it has been located since 2021 on Agias Eirinis square pedestrian street in Athens. The atmosphere feels like a modern pastry nook meets a retro patisserie, where the “owl motif” is present in every corner, symbolizing intelligence and creative flavors.

The range is rich and abundant

Six kinds of cheesecake are available, including Nutella Oreo sauce, salted caramel topping, or Bueno chocolate with caramelized hazelnuts. One of the biggest hits is the „Zoumero”—a moist chocolate cake drenched in hot chocolate sauce; this is pure dessert sin.

Brownie Afternoon

Among Koukouvaya’s legendary desserts, the brownie (often called “chocolate mosaic”) holds a special place: dense, rich, and intensely chocolatey, often served in generously large portions—ideal for sharing.

Cheesecake magic

Their cheesecakes put on a real show: big slices, bold flavor combinations—strawberry or blueberry jam, salted caramel, Oreo, or Bueno toppings. Portions are generous, so sharing is highly recommended.

Atmosphere and service

The dessert master experience is enhanced by the calm, bright interior, the pleasant indoor space, or the quiet terrace, where owl decorations are both charming and memorable. The service is friendly, and the desserts come in generous portions, so if you have little space left, share it—it’s a real experience. So if at Koukouvaya you find yourself choosing between a brownie and a slice of cheesecake, don’t hesitate:

Must-try:

The Zoumero should be the dense, rich, chocolate experience large enough for two.

Not just islands: discovering Athens beyond the city buzz

After the pulsating energy of downtown Athens, it feels like a breath of fresh air to escape the noise and head toward the sea. From the cool subway tunnels, a comfortable bus ride gradually takes you away from the crowded streets. Buildings thin out, and the horizon opens wide. At first, a narrow sliver of blue glimmers through the window — then suddenly, the endless mirror of the Aegean Sea stretches before you.

Vouliagmeni — Athens’ elegant seaside district — unfolds like a slice of the Greek Riviera, a completely different world: the air is salty and fresh, palm trees line the streets, and the pace slows down. City rush gives way to the easy rhythm of vacation. Here lies the Amarilia Hotel, a perfect base for lovers of the sea. From its bright white façade, just a few minutes’ walk leads you to sandy shores, where the waves gently caress your feet.

Amarilia Hotel – steps from the sea

Balcony with a Sea View

The Amarilia Hotel is a coastal sanctuary where your days are timed by the waves. Its surroundings feel almost unreal in their tranquility and cleanliness. From the balcony, the salty breeze greets you first thing in the morning, and the beach is literally just a few steps away. After a couple of days, I longed for the sea, and Amarilia delivered exactly that. Evening strolls along the shore, the soft sound of waves, and a Greek sunset — those are the moments when you truly feel you’re in the right place. Perched overlooking the Vouliagmeni Bay, the hotel is a cozy retreat: the sea just steps away, yet the hotel pool is an inviting alternative, especially in the early afternoon heat. As a sea lover, I made sure to try the pool — large, deep, and perfectly temperate, it would have been a shame to miss out.

Mediterranean feeling
Mediterranean feeling

We stayed in a spacious three-room suite with three balconies offering unmatched views: a charming chapel in the foreground, and beyond it, the endless sea.

The room welcomed us with a fresh fruit basket and premium wine; the bed was comfy, the living area roomy, and two bedrooms ensured privacy and rest. A true little haven of coastal luxury.

Back to the urban pulse

After our seaside escape, we returned to the city buzz of Athens to soak up its rich, dense atmosphere once more.

Skip This:
Unfortunately, we had a bad experience at Garbi Restaurant in Vouliagmeni. Despite its good reputation, we were badly treated — from waitstaff to owners, the service was unacceptable. It cast a shadow over our evening, and we strongly recommend avoiding this place.

Golden City Hotel – genuine hospitality in the heart of Athens

Luckily, every cloud has a silver lining. At the Golden City Hotel, everyone was incredibly kind and attentive. Here, we felt the true meaning of hospitality. Special thanks to Mr. Emanouel, who — without knowing we were journalists — upgraded us spontaneously from a less desirable apartment to a wonderful hotel room, recommended excellent restaurants, and greeted us with a constant smile and great humor. Moments like these make a holiday truly unforgettable!

View of Athenian streets from the Hotel

Located near the bustling city center, Golden City Hotel offers a slightly different vibe. Just a two-minute walk from breakfast lands you in the vibrant streets of Athens. It’s a comfortable base to explore markets, street cafés, and historic sights. The breakfast menu features hearty, homemade dishes like spinach pie and olive bread.

An Oasis Amid the Urban Jungle

While the city center can show its rough edges — from dirty streets to areas affected by drug use — the hotel itself is a peaceful, clean haven. Rooms are comfortable, making it a real refuge amidst the city’s chaos.

One of the biggest perks? Breakfast on the rooftop terrace, where you enjoy your meal with the first rays of sun and a stunning cityscape. We were given a family room with a balcony — a cozy, peaceful spot perfect for relaxing after a day in the city.

Mini Greece – Greece in a Nutshell

Miniature Greek Landscape
The Mini Greece exhibition is a special time travel experience: detailed scale models let you explore Greece’s iconic landscapes and architecture in just one hour. From Santorini’s blue domes to the towering Meteora monasteries, it’s the perfect introduction to a Greek journey.

Visiting Mini Greece in Athens surprised me with how immersive it is. Walking through the entire country in one place, with stunningly detailed miniatures, felt like traveling without a plane ticket — an inspiring start before your real Greek adventure.

Handy Tips for your visit:

  • Best time to visit: Spring and autumn — mild weather and fewer tourists.
  • Getting around: The city center is easy to explore by metro and tram.
  • Foodie tip: Most tavernas serve small portions, so you can sample more dishes in one meal.

Athens wasn’t just history to me this time — it was a vibe, a feeling. After a week, I’m already sure I’ll come back.

Travel Tips for Athens

  • Stay in multiple neighborhoods to experience the city’s many faces.
  • Try everything the locals recommend — even if you can’t pronounce it!
  • Check out the Mini Greece exhibition before your big Greek road trip — perfect for inspiration.

Athens doesn’t try to be perfect — and maybe that’s why it’s so lovable. The gleaming museums, rooftop bars, and scent of the sea are just as much part of the city as the noise, the dirt, and the raw reality of life here. In Athens, you’re not just a tourist — you become part of the city’s heartbeat.

What does Athens mean to me? A lively, vibrant city, not a showroom or the prettiest place I’ve ever been — but a city where something is always happening. And isn’t that why we travel? To have stories to tell, memories to cherish.
